These days, it almost feels like the world revolves around superheroes and we're all just living in it. For years, cinema has been dominated by comic book franchises like the Marvel Cinematic Universe and the DC Extended Universe so it no longer comes as a surprise how in 2018, Sony Pictures established its own comic book film franchise featuring characters from the Spider-Man universe.

Dubbed as "Sony Pictures' Universe of Marvel Characters", the franchise which is home to projects like Venom, Morbius, Silk, and Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse can be quite a mouthful. This is probably the reason why the production company has decided to change things up a bit and officially rename the franchise.

During Sony's two-hour presentation at the recently-concluded CinemaCon 2021 (via ScreenRant) which was also home to the trailer debut of Spider-Man: No Way Home, it was announced that the SPUMC will now be rebranded to simply "Sony's Spider-Man Universe" moving forward.

Sony's rebranding of its shared Marvel film universe makes a lot of sense because, for the most part, the production company only has the rights to characters from the Spider-Man lore. Sure, it's still technically Marvel at the end of the day but simply referring to it as "Sony's Spider-Man Universe" gives it a feeling of exclusivity despite their current partnership with Marvel Studios.

Speaking of, we still don't know what the future holds for Spider-Man in the MCU and with No Way Home reportedly being the final time we'll see him in the franchise, I'm hopeful that both studios will be able to renegotiate a brand new deal to keep our friendly neighborhood in the MCU.

Meanwhile, Spider-Man: No Way Home will be released in cinemas on December 17, 2021.
