It's looking pretty obvious that Marvel Studios and Sony Pictures will be pulling out their biggest guns for the Marvel Cinematic Universe's third Spider-Man film and while we still know very little about the upcoming superhero flick titled Spider-Man: No Way Home, all the recent development regarding it pretty much suggests that something huge is going to take place. Of course, it's a little too early to get excited but things are looking hella promising for sure.
Set in the Marvel Cinematic "Multiverse", the film which serves as Tom Holland's fifth outing as our web-slinging hero is rumored to be the actor's final MCU appearance before Sony Pictures moves him over to its own shared film universe and by the looks of it, both Marvel and Sony are making the most out of their partnership as No Way Home is already shaping up to be one of the MCU's best offerings. Here's what we know so far:
It picks up where Far From Home left off
This one clearly is a no-brainer, of course. 2019's Spider-Man: Far From Home featured the shocking revelation surrounding Spider-Man's secret identity, thanks to the cunning and devious Mysterio, and with Peter Parker finally getting exposed, it'll be interesting to see how this affects his normal life and the people who are most important to him. After all, the entire point of him taking on an alter-ego is to save his loved ones from danger.
Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield are rumored to return
This has been going on for quite some time now but Spider-Man 3 is said to bring back Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield to reprise their Spider-Man roles. Sony has recently come out to put a stop to the rumor mill, but the recent announcement surrounding Alfred Molina, Kirsten Dunst, and Emma Stone's castings has once again opened the possibility of Maguire and Garfield's inclusion in the film.
The "Multiversal" Sinister Six
Tobey and Andrew's potential involvement in the film leads us to this one. So far, it's been confirmed that Electro and Doc Ock will be appearing in the film. Aside from them, there's also the possibility of Vulture and Scorpion joining the chaos and we can count Mysterio in assuming he's still "alive". This could very well be an indication that the Sinister Six will officially be formed in the third film. If you'll do the math though, there's still one position left open in the potential supervillain team but who could that be? Kraven the Hunter? Venom? Turns out, a certain villain from the Sam Raimi trilogy is set to make his menacing comeback.
One of Peter's close friends could turn on him
We reported a few weeks back that a new Spider-Man 3rumor suggests that Peter's best buddy Ned Leeds could undergo a villainous transformation in the film and take on the Hobgoblin mantle. This allegedly takes place after Ned's family gets killed in an accident that has something to do with Spider-Man. Recently, fans have been buzzing about actor Jacob Batalon's drastic body transformation and it led a lot of them to believe that he's preparing to become the MCU's Hobgoblin.
WandaVision and Loki are responsible for the events of the film
With No Way Home already confirmed to have a multiversal theme, it's crystal clear that the events that took place in Phase Four shows such as WandaVision and Loki will be responsible for shaping up the film's central conflict. So far, we don't know if Elizabeth Olsen or Tom Hiddleston will appear in the film but don't be surprised if they do.
Official Trailer for Spider-Man: No Way Home
The possibilities are endless for Spider-Man: No Way Home and while it's fun to come up with theories and do some digging, we still need to see the film in full to really witness everything unfold. One thing's for sure though, Marvel Studios and Sony Pictures are indeed pulling the trigger and making it a full-blown Spider-Verse film and while it's still a little too early to air our verdict, it could easily go down as the biggest crossover event in comic book film history. How can you not be excited about that?
Spider-Man: No Way Home is scheduled for theatrical release on December 17, 2021.
