Sony Paid Big Money to Acquire Spider-Man PS4 Developer Insomniac Games

Last year, Sony decided to purchase Insomniac Games so that they would develop games exclusively for the PlayStation brand. The company already made exclusives like Ratchet and Clank, along with the critically-acclaimed Marvel's Spider-Man aka Spider-Man PS4 so it looks like Sony just wanted to make things official. So, how much did Sony pay to make Insomniac Games an official developer for PlayStation-only games? A lot.

According to a recent SEC filing, Sony paid $229 million to get the Spider-Man PS4 developers on board for them. That's a big amount of money and Sony probably knows they're worth it, given how popular Marvel's Spider-Man and Ratchet and Clank ended up being. Since Microsoft managed to buy a number of high-profile developers to make games for the Xbox Series X, we're surprised Sony hasn't poached as many developers as they can.

Sony has been killing it with their exclusives, from Horizon Zero Dawn to The Last of Us, and, of course, Marvel's Spider-Man. These games are pretty killer and have turned even the most faithful Xbox loyalists to try out the PlayStation 4 since the Xbox One, which does have some great games, just can't compete when it comes to exclusives.

With the PlayStation 5 coming out later this year, it will be interesting to see what Insomniac Games has planned for the console.
