Sonny Boy took a turn for the sinister this week, in more ways than one. Nagara's power takes him, quite literally, to a strange place, a very creepy metatextual story scares both characters and viewers, and the unexpected appearance of a new character threatens the already delicate balance the students have achieved.
It's still hard to tell just what is happening, but the original anime by studio Madhouse seems dedicated to delivering a story we'll remember for a long time - even if we don't understand much of it.

Sonny Boy Overview and Episode 4Recap
Sonny Boy is an original anime by Studio Madhouse. It all starts with a classroom of 36 students on a regular summer day. The day, of course, stops being regular when the high-schoolers are transported into another dimension, school building and all.

Nagara doesn't fully understand his new power, but when someone tries to push him into a body of water and he accidentally hits the ground, the students get a brief glimpse of the schoolyard, leading them to believe Nagara can lead them home.
A rumor starts circulating about baseball-playing monkeys that can only be seen by certain students and under specific circumstances. Cap narrates a story of how a monkey baseball game was created and dismantled off-screen, likely symbolizing different ways of being.
Cap speaks of a monkey that got killed off by the audience and a one-armed monkey who wanted to play even though he had no talent, a likely symbolism for Cap himself, who isn't a particularly talented player but still participates in the game because he enjoys it.
As Nagara's powers become more potent, students like Ace pressure him to return them to the normal world although he insists he does not know how to. When he tries, he only ends up in strange monochrome backgrounds, before returning to the island; it seems he can only move between dimensions in the world they've found themselves in.
Things get even stranger when one of the children's teachers makes an appearance, and she's decidedly not in a good mood. So will her appearance be a game-changer? While I absolutely love the anime's mind-bending vibes so far, I hope for it to turn creepier and even more surprising. For the time being, we can only wait to find out. (And perhaps rewatch. I'm still not sure about the monkey metaphor.)

The release date for Sonny Boy Episode 5, titled "Jump Classroom," is next Friday the 13th of August for subscribed Funimationand Huluusers. Non-subscribed users will have to wait one more week, until the 20th of August. Episode 4 should be available to all by then. No dub has been announced yet, but we're hoping that we can expect one soon.
