Sonic the Hedgehog's Jim Carrey Explains How Trailer Backlash Led to Film's Success

Sonic the Hedgehog might have looked like a bomb before it came out but the big changes made to the character helped make it a big hit. It helps that the redesign made Sonic more faithful to his video game counterpart, not to mention cuter than a button. Jim Carrey, who plays Doctor Robotnik, was originally against the redesign since he felt that fans shouldn't have control over a movie product but it looks like he sees the initial backlash and well-received redesign as a good thing now.

During an interview with Fox News, Carrey admitted that the redesign turned out to be a "great thing," saying that it felt like a cooperative process between the fans and filmmakers. Carrey also praised director Jeff Fowler, who he claims had "no ego" amidst all the backlash, though one has to wonder how that original design ever made the greenlight.

"It turned out to be a co-op where everybody was in on the creation. I think everybody felt good about it ultimately because [director] Jeff Fowler [had] no ego involved at all. He just went, 'These people grew up with it, and it's important to them that we get it right.' And I think it was just a much better movie because of it."

Based on sales figures, it looks like Sonic the Hedgehog is en route to becoming the most financially successful video game movie out there. Fans interested in the movie can check it out in theaters right now.
