Solo: A Star Wars Story Screen Writers Explain Why Fans Need A Han Solo Spinoff

Some Star Wars fans might have been excited after hearing that Lucasfilm was developing Solo: A Star Wars Story, but others openly wondered why the spinoff story was necessary. A lot of fans felt like the most important parts of Han's story was already told and many felt like the studio would be better off exploring characters like Obi-Wan Kenobi.

Though Solo screenwriters Lawrence and Jon Kasdan both admit that there really isn't a need for Solo, the father-son writing duo say that they just wanted to give moviegoers a fun Star Wars heist film.

"I'm mystified by that one question. I feel I can answer almost any other question. But, ‘Why do we need…?' I feel that you can say that about any movie that was ever made," Lawrence explained in an interview with Inside the Magic."You find out more than you knew before. Godfather [Part] II was not necessary, but I'm so glad that Francis [Ford Coppola] made it. I wanted to know more about that."

The publication also asked Jon the same question. The younger Kasdan's quick reply? "We don't."

According to the legendary Kasdan's son, Solo was just about as necessary as Iron Man 2, 3 and Batman Begins. Sure Christopher Nolan's Batman movies have been widely celebrated by fans and critics, but before the director came on board to create his own Dark Knight trilogy, there'd already been five Batman movies in Hollywood.

Of course, the question "Why do we need a Han Solo spinoff?" doesn't actually seem very necessary. At the end of the day, Star Wars fans are going to lineup in cinemas and check out what Lucasfilm's galaxy far, far away has to offer.

Solo: A Star Wars Story premieres May 25.
