Lucasfilm Reportedly Has A Plot And Director Pinned Down For Obi-Wan Kenobi Movie


Star Wars fans might be busy preparing for Solo: A Star Wars Story's premiere next week, but it looks like there've been quite a number of reports coming out about Lucasfilm's next possible Star Wars spinoff movie, Obi-Wan: A Star Wars Story.

The Obi-Wan Kenobi standalone film has yet to be confirmed, however, according to TMZ, word has it that the project already director confirmed. Stephen Daldry is reportedly attached to direct the film with a production start date being eyed for spring next year. For those who aren't familiar with the filmmaker, Daldry is an Olivier-Award winning director whose films like Billy Elliot, The Hours, and The Reader have won nominations for Best Director and Best Picture at the Academy Awards.

Daldry isn't the only one pinned down for Obi-Wan. The publication's report also says that Lucasfilm already has a plot for the Star Wars spinoff. Unlike Solo, the Obi-Wan Kenobi standalone film isn't an origin story but instead a direct prequel to A New Hope. Set on Tatooine, the film starts with Obi-Wan living in hiding while watching over Luke as the child of Anakin grows to adulthood. Obi-wan is forced out of hiding when Tensions between local farmers on Tatooine and a tribe of Sand People.

Unfortunately, the publication doesn't have an answer to one of the biggest questions regarding the project: whether or not Ewan McGregor will reprise his role as Obi-Wan Kenobi. First debuting as a young Obi-Wan in Star Wars: Episode I­- The Phantom Menace, McGregor became an easy favorite among fans.

We'll just have to wait for Lucasfilm's official announcement for the Obi-Wan Kenobi movie.

Solo: A Star Wars: Story premieres May 25.
