Skip and Loafer Director Explains How They Came Up With Opening Dance

The Skip and Loafer anime has a lot of memorable scenes, but one that stands out for many viewers is its opening dance. In a recent interview, Skip and Loafer director Kotomi Deai shared how they came up with the adorable dance in the opening.

Though the anime’s opening starts like a typical romance anime, Mitsumi and Shima’s dance is a breath of fresh air for many.

Not to mention that it perfectly captures the wholesome and comfy vibe of the show.

Skip and Loafer’s Opening Is One of the Most Wholesome of Spring 23

Spring 23 had a lot of memorable openings, with shows like Oshi no Ko and Heavenly Delusion having catchy songs and unique animation.

While it's not as talked about, Skip and Loafer's opening song is easily one of the most wholesome as the art style and dance animation are simply lovely.

What’s great about it is that it even became a trend among fans of the show, so much so that even its voice cast did an adorable recreation of the dance which delighted viewers both in Japan and overseas.

In the interview, Deai mentioned that she wanted to capture the everyday life appeal of the manga source material in the opening so that it can represent what the show will be about.

Although the opening does have some everyday life scenes, the staff decided to add the dance part to show the groove of the song that’s used.

Skip and Loafer Director Shares the Inspirations for the Opening Dance

The decision to add a cute dance segment in the opening didn’t just come out of the blue.

Deai shared that she and the team were inspired by the manga’s covers and artwork.

One of the main inspirations was the cover of the first volume which shows Mitsumi skipping happily with Shima close behind.

Though it’s not exactly a dance, the cover art’s dynamic pose pushed them to make a dynamic sequence.

Another key inspiration is the manga’s fifth chapter which features cover art that references the movie La La Land.

Thanks to this, the team was inspired to make the dance for the opening.

Deai said that it was quite difficult to make, but the end result was worth it. Based on the reactions, fans also agree that it’s a perfect opening for the anime.

Currently, there’s no word yet on a second season for Skip and Loafer.
