Sherlock Holmes 3 Delayed for a Year

Benedict Cumberbatch may be the face of modern-day Sherlock Holmes, but some fans remember that it was Robert Downey Jr. who brought the character to life back in 2009. A third movie in the franchise was set to come out next year, but news has it that the film has been delayed.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Sherlock Holmes 3 has moved from its original December 2020 release date to Dec. 22, 2021. We don't have any details as to why the film was delayed, but I'm sure it may have something to do with keeping everyone's schedules open. With RDJ, Jude Law, and director Guy Ritchie working on several different franchises, it would make sense that their schedules would need some time to open up.

After Avengers: Endgame, RDJ is set to star in a Dr. Dolittle franchise with him taking the spotlight. Law is now the new Albus Dumbledore of the Fantastic Beasts films, and Ritchie is currently busy gearing up for the release of his live-action Aladdin.

Then again, it's worth noting that SH3 doesn't have a director attached to it yet. While I think Ritchie is already a safe bet, I'm curious if WB is planning on hiring someone else to take over. Hopefully, RDJ himself won't be doing the project unless Ritchie is involved. We don't want another James Gunn situation on our hands.

Catch Sherlock Holmes 3 in theaters Dec. 22, 2021. Catch RDJ in Avengers: Endgame April 26.
