Shazam!’s Zachary Levi Happy They Killed Off His Character in Thor: Ragnarok

Zachary Levi may be the face of DCEU's Shazam!, but he actually has a smaller role in the MCU as Thor's friend Fandral. Fandral was, of course, killed off in Thor: Ragnarok, but Levi was actually happy that they decided to cut him.

Talking to Deadline, he reveals that he felt ‘lucky' that Fandral was killed off, because if he wasn't, Levi probably never would have been able to play Shazam. As it turns out, Levi thought he may not even land the role at all, but after failing to land Star-Lord in Guardians of the Galaxy, he decided to come back to lead this film.

Personally, I'm kind of disappointed that Fandral was killed off. With the silly rivalry between Marvel and DC fans, it would really be cool to have one actor play a hero on one film and a side character in another. Then again, it might have been a nightmare of a schedule to keep for Levi, having to shoot for both DC and Marvel.

With time travel said to be a factor in Avengers: Endgame, maybe Marvel is cooking up for some alternate timeline where Fandral actually survives. To be honest, I thought the Warriors Three deserved a better ending than what they got in Ragnarok. Hopefully, Marvel is thinking the same.

Billy Batson is a streetwise 14-year-old who can magically transform into the adult superhero Shazam simply by shouting out one word. His newfound powers soon get put to the test when he squares off against the evil Dr. Thaddeus Sivana.

Shazam! hits theaters April 5.
