A lot of people were excited to know that Dwayne Johnson will be Black Adam for the DCEU, but they were a tad disappointed when they realized he won't be the main villain of the Shazam! movie. Turns out, Johnson is still attached as an executive producer for the film, and WB has released the official synopsis.
Here's the official synopsis for Shazam!:
We all have a superhero inside us, it just takes a bit of magic to bring it out. In Billy Batson's (Angel) case, by shouting out one word—SHAZAM!—this streetwise 14-year-old foster kid can turn into the adult Super Hero Shazam (Levi), courtesy of an ancient wizard. Still a kid at heart—inside a ripped, godlike body—Shazam revels in this adult version of himself by doing what any teen would do with superpowers: have fun with them! Can he fly? Does he have X-ray vision? Can he shoot lightning out of his hands? Can he skip his social studies test? Shazam sets out to test the limits of his abilities with the joyful recklessness of a child. But he'll need to master these powers quickly in order to fight the deadly forces of evil controlled by Dr. Thaddeus Sivana (Strong).
Though the Rock won't be playing the main villain of the film, I could still imagine him making some sort of appearance as Adam. In the comics, Adam was in the place of Captain Marvel as he was granted the powers of Shazam; things just turned for the worst when Adam was corrupted and had to be banished—the usual backstory for any supervillain. I can imagine Adam's story revealed as the Wizard Shazam explains his lore to Billy Batson.
With the DCEU more on the glum side of the genre, Shazam! is promising to be one of the more light-hearted films of DC; some even go so far to say it's the first comedy for the DCEU.
I don't really mind what genre you place it, as long as the movie turns out fine, I'll be happy.
Shazam! is set to hit theaters April 5, 2019.
