Shang-Chi Star Simu Liu Blasts Disney Boss for 'Underestimating' MCU Film

I think it's pretty safe to say that among all of the upcoming Marvel Cinematic Universe Phase Four offerings, fans felt the least amount of hype with Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings which is actually pretty understandable considering the character — despite his rich comic book history, isn't exactly part of the upper echelon of Marvel superheroes. But as soon as the project's first official trailer dropped, the public perception of Shang-Chi drastically changed and the underwhelming response it got when it was first announced in 2019 was later changed into excitement.

During Disney's earnings call this week, CEO Bob Chapek described the upcoming Phase Four offering as "an interesting experiment". I don't know what that remark means exactly but apparently, his choice of words didn't sit well with Simu Liu and the ever-so-outspoken Canadian star took to social media to air his frustrations. In a fiery tweet, the Kim's Convenience actor said that Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings is not Marvel Studios' little "experiment" and pointed out that they have always been the underdogs.

He also confidently said that the film will end up being the "surprise" before urging fans to see the film in theaters come September. Simu wrote: "We are not an experiment. We are the underdog; the underestimated. We are the ceiling-breakers. We are the celebration of culture and joy that will persevere after an embattled year. We are the surprise. I'm fired the f**k up to make history on September 3rd; JOIN US."

I totally get when Simu is coming from because among all the MCU newcomers, he has the most to prove and when you think about it, the Master of Kung-Fu is a fish out of water given the fact that he doesn't have superpowers. However, I'm pretty confident the project will turn out to be a massive success and it just might be Marvel's sleeper hit for this year. I'm beyond excited to see it but I'm hoping Disney will make it available via Premier Access.

Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings is scheduled to premiere in cinemas on September 3, 2021.
