Seungri, the former member of the K-pop boy group BIGBANG, is facing the effects of the Burning Sun scandal.

The former K-pop idol’s career hit a glitch after he got involved in the Burning Sun scandal. The nightclub, which was founded in 2018, was connected to the singer as a creative director and shareholder.

He and more famous people in the industry had been named in several allegations surrounding the nightclub, including police corruption, hidden camera footage, drug distribution, sexual assault, tax evasion, and prostitution.

Seungri’s case had been transferred to the military court following his enlistment in March 2020, and the court recently provided development in it.

Court Upholds Seungri’s Term

The Yonhap News Agency first confirmed that the Supreme Court rejected Seungri and the prosecution’s appeals on Thursday. Their bids were related to the former idol’s sentence for his nine charges.

Seungri – whose real name is Lee Seung Hyun -- and his party attempted to have a lower sentence, while the prosecution wanted to have a longer one.

In comparison, he was initially sentenced to three years in prison after he was found guilty of nine different charges. After the second trial, his sentence was reduced to 18 months after showing guilt for his actions.

Seungri Pleads Guilty

The new development came months after Seungri pleaded guilty to only one of the nine charges to an appeal court. He acknowledged his guilt in violating foreign exchange policies related to overseas gambling.

His combined gambling money was estimated to be at $1.7 million dollars.

With that, the South Korean High Court for Armed Forces announced his 18-month jail term.

Seungri’s Burning Sun scandal emerged after singer Jung Joon Young got investigated and charged after secretly filming a sexual act.
