Sean Astin Defends LOTR as a Good Climate Change Parable


There are a lot of things to love about Lord of the Rings, and J.R.R. Tolkien's story is filled to the brim with allegories and themes of good and evil. Sean Astin, who plays Sam Gamgee, is an advocate of preventing Climate Change, and he's poked fun at his own LOTR tweets getting more attention than his more passionate ones. Just recently he got into this slight tiff with a Dr. Brett Favaro who thinks that LOTR has nothing to say about saving the environment.

As I said, it's just a slight tiff, and both Astin and Favaro are still on the side of preventing Climate Change. However, I'm sure there are a lot of LOTR fans that are happy that Astin decided to stand his ground when it came to defending the message of Tolkien's work.

Yes, the main conflict is about good conquering evil, but the entire plight of the Ents with Saruman was filled to the brim with allegories about saving the environment and how industrialization destroys the Earth. Know your stories before judging them publicly online, Dr. Favaro!

Though the Lord of the Rings films came out more than half a decade ago, the movies still manage to be loved by millions to this day. With actors usually not wanting anything to do with the films that made them famous, it's cool that Astin still sees the merit in working on those movies.

He did play a gardener after all.
