Scarlett Johansson Does Not Want Black Widow Film to be an Origin Story or Spy Film

Marvel fans still have to wait for roughly half a year before the beginning of Phase 4 with the highly-anticipated Black Widow film, but lead actress Scarlett Johansson has recently come forward with a few tidbits of what to expect. Speaking to Vanity Fair, the actress described her character's journey of self-forgiveness, transition, and self-actualization.

Although considered a stand-alone film for the redhead Original Six Avenger, Johansson refuses to classify it as an origin story or another espionage story. In the interview, she says, "I didn't want it to feel superficial at all. I only wanted to do it if it actually fit where I was with that character."

She further expounded and used the last Avengers film as an example: "I felt that unless we got to something deep, then there was no reason to make it. Because I did my job in Endgame, and actually felt satisfied with that. I would have been happy to let that be it. So there had to be a reason to do it other than just to milk something."

The actress says that the film will deal with heavy themes and "a lot of trauma and pain" and will hopefully end up empowering fans. Of what she ultimately wants for the film, Johansson says that she hopes to "elevate the genre" and to showcase something both "explosive and dynamic."

More details of the film have yet to surface, but it has been long confirmed that Johansson is set to appear together with David Harbour as The Red Guardian, O-T Fagbenle as Mason, and Rachel Weisz as Melina. It is also said to be set following the events of Captain America: Civil War.

Black Widow will signal the beginning of Marvel Studios' Phase 4 on May 1, 2020.
