San Diego Comic-Con Officially Canceled Due to Coronavirus Pandemic

It looks like it's finally happened. The organizers behind this year's San Diego Comic-Con International have decided to cancel the event in light of the novel coronavirus pandemic.

For the past two months, pop culture fans have been looking to news about whether this year's SDCC would push through.

While the organizers of major comic book events like the Emerald City Comic Con and Wonder Con had announced the conventions' postponement early on during the beginning of the COVID-19 crisis, the organizers behind SDCC decided to wait for further updates about the novel coronavirus, hoping that the pandemic would come to an end before the start of summer. It was an understandable move – the 2020 San Diego Comic-Con was scheduled to take place from July 23 to July 26.

However, now that leading health experts in the US predict that the country has yet to reach the peak of the pandemic, the organizers behind the convention finally have their answer. According to The Hollywood Reporter, SDCC has to shut down its doors for the time being.

"Extraordinary times require extraordinary measures and while we are saddened to take this action, we know it is the right decision," Comic-Con spokesperson David Glanzer said in a statement. "We eagerly look forward to the time when we can all meet again and share in the community we all love and enjoy."

Now that the event has been canceled, convention-goers who have purchased SDCC badges will be able to request a refund or a transfer to next year's Comic-Con. An email will be sent to convention badge holders during the upcoming weeks to explain the process behind the refund/transfer.

Badgeholders who have booked hotels through onPeak don't need to take any further action. They will receive automatic refunds now that the event has been canceled.
