With the airing of Ice Queendom now underway, RWBY is showing no signs of slowing down as the first feature film in the franchise has been announced. This new project is the RWBY Justice League crossover film.
According to the official announcement made via the series' official Twitter account, the movie will have a “wholly original story” that promises to expand the world of the previous RWBY and DC Comics collaboration. While the announcement did not show any footage or screenshots from the movie, it did reveal the film’s official logo.
RWBY first announced a partnership with DC Comics at New York Comic Con 2018. The project kicked off with a RWBY comic book series that was published by DC in 2019.
This was followed up by a RWBY and Justice League seven-part comic series which was initially released digitally in March 2021, with a print issue being released in April 2021.
The RWBY Justice League comic is written by Marguerite Bennett (Future State: Kara Zor-El, Superwoman) and features art by Aneke (Future State: Batgirls), Stephanie Pepper (The Mummy), and Emanuela Lupacchino (Future State: Gotham City Sirens).
RWBY started as a computer-animated web series that was created by Monty Oum of Rooster Teeth.
The series’ first season was released back in 2013, and it quickly became Rooster Teeth’s biggest hit, so much so that it has continued to run to this day.
The show's eighth season finished its run in March 2021, and the ninth season of RWBY is set to premiere sometime in 2023.
With the web series’ success, RWBY has received numerous spin-offs, including a manga series, video games, and an anime series entitled RWBY: Ice Queendom. This anime started airing yesterday, July 23.
This RWBY feature film is currently in production at Rooster Teeth in partnership with Warner Bros. Animation and Warner Bros. Home Entertainment.
Animation and production of the movie are handled by the same team that produces the main RWBY series. The movie is set to premiere sometime in 2023.
