Ron Howard Says He Expects Solo: A Star Wars Story To Be Controversial

Lucasfilm's been rolling out a lot of controversial Star Wars films as of late, and director Ron Howard doesn't expect Solo: A Star Wars Story to be any different.

Speaking with the Press Association (via The Independent) to help promote his upcoming Star Wars spinoff, the filmmaker opened up and admitted that he actually expects Solo to be another controversial entry in the Star Wars franchise.

"I'm sure that Solo will be controversial for some people because it's sort of a different Star Wars movie," Howard explained.

Unlike most of the films in the franchise, Solo doesn't have The Force or a war to excite audiences.

"It really focuses on a single character for the first time, which is this rite of passage, defining, adventure story about Han Solo," the director said.

Though the thought of another Star Wars film usually excites the fanbase, a lot of fans questioned the necessity of Solo the moment Lucasfilm announced that it was working on the standalone movies. Most wanted a spinoff for Obi-Wan Kenobi. Others for Yoda. Some for Boba Fett.

And that's not the only struggle that Solo had to deal with. Last year the film was shrouded in controversy after Lucasfilm decided to part ways with original directors Phil Lord and Chris Miller. The studio just had too many "creative differences" with the filmmakers and decided to fire the two while the film was deep in production.

The separation caused a lot of anxiety for fans, wondering whether the quality of the film would be affected by a sudden change in directors. Luckily Lord and Miller's replacement, the award-winning filmmaker Ron Howard, has managed to assuage the fanbase's concerns. There's been a lot of excitement over the film over the past few days, and we can't wait to see what Lucasfilm has for us this time.

Solo: A Star Wars Story premieres May 25.
