Rogue One’s Tony Gilroy On What He Had To Fix On The Star Wars Spinoff

Gareth Edwards might have been the director of Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, however, part of the film's success was because of the script rewrites and the reshoots done by Tony Gilroy.

Though Gilroy doesn't usually open up about how much of the film he actually fixed, the filmmaker isn't against talking about some of the film's issues before he was tapped by Lucasfilm to help fix the Star Wars spinoff.

Speaking with fans during a Montclair State University event (via ComicBook.com), Gilroy opened up about the confusion on production and deteriorating characters.

"When things pass through many hands and there's a great deal of confusion ... and there's all kinds of accessories and jewelries and bootstraps and zippers, and all the rest of the stuff. The purity for the characters, if it's not there, to begin with, it just deteriorates and just turns into an absolute mush," Gilroy said during the event.

There was a lot riding on Rogue One. Not only was it the first film that wasn't directly connected to the main Skywalker saga, but it also had to introduce to fans new characters that no one was familiar with. There was so much going on in the film that according to Gilroy, he had to simplify Rogue One to the key element of sacrifice.

Giving the film an anchor definitely helped streamline Rogue One's story, and in the end, the spinoff movie became an indubitable success for Lucasfilm. With a production budget of $200 million, the film went on to make $1.05 billion at the global box office.
