Rogue One Director Reveals His Process for Creating The Movie’s Concepts

Movie directors have their own particular styles when it comes to bringing their films to life. Perhaps it's just a little bit different when you're called to direct a movie from a franchise that not only had an insane following, but was also geared to set the bar for the franchise's spin-offs.

This was the case for director Gareth Edwards and his blockbuster hit Rogue One. Speaking to Telegraph, Edwards touched on the interesting process of how he had conceptualized some of the ideas and looks for Rogue One—he had turned to different books to give some semblance of limitations to what would otherwise be an "infinite playground" of ideas.

"Every time you saw something and went, ‘I think that should be in the movie,' you would share it with people and then you start trying to do paintings and concept art based on those ideas."

Edwards must've felt nostalgic about the very process, considering that he's a self-admitted Star Wars fan even as a kid. He even had old drawings of ships and worlds from the franchise that he would sometimes get scolded in school for.

Included in these imageries that the team made use of are from Vietnam and Nepal, places that essentially had monasteries. In addition, Edwards said that The Thin Red Line was a big reference.

"We were trying to find locations that George Lucas hadn't shot in, or overused, that were part of our world. If anything, you're trying to give it boundaries. Because it's too infinite at the beginning, so you're trying to create limitations for yourself."

While some filmmakers may see this as an unnecessary limitation, Edwards actually believes that it does the opposite, which is to avoid the paralysis of too much freedom and no actual movement.

As we can see, that was a success in itself with Rogue One.

Rogue One is already out on digital HD and is headed to Blu-ray and DVD this month.
