Rogue One: A Star Wars Story Almost Had a Happier Ending

Rogue One: A Star Wars Story will go down as one of the most tragic tales told in this epic saga as many fans were holding back tears to see the sacrifice this unlikely band of heroes made. In the end, they did achieve their goal and The Resistance was able to take down the Death Star but to those that wanted a happier ending for Jyn Erso and her friends, we almost got one.

Speaking with The Playlist, writer Chris Weitz revealed that there was a different ending for the film planned before he was brought in for re-writes (and eventual re-shoots). Apparently, things were going to be much happier and Jyn would have gotten married which, to be honest, sounds like a bad idea.

"The version prior to [mine] didn't have everyone die.As a matter of fact, it ended with a wedding. I think it was on the presumption that Disney wouldn't allow characters to die with such abandon.I felt it was necessary because nobody ever mentions them or sees them again. But also because we've done this whole sort of theme about sacrifice that it was appropriate that all of our main characters die."

As sad as it was, we can all agree that this was the best ending that could have been done for the story. They were entering enemy territory and giving The Rebellion a way to defeat The Empire so a story-related sacrifice was necessary. Plus, if they lived, how would the writers explain that plot hole?

Rogue One: A Star Wars Story is now available on Blu-Ray and digital outlets. Star Wars: Episode IX comes out on December 20.
