Rocko's Modern Life: Static Cling to Deal with a Transgender Ralph Bighead

When the trailers started coming out for Rocko's Modern Life: Static Cling, it mostly had Rocko trying to cope with the changes in technology and modern entertainment. What's interesting is, the special is also set to delve into trans rights and will have original character Ralph Bighead transitioning into Rachel.

Talking to Entertainment Weekly, creator Joe Murray explains:

"When I started writing [Static Cling], I really started latching onto the idea of change and how society has changed and what's gone on in the last 20 years and the development of our characters and how they would react to change… It felt natural, because it was not only about change, about somebody finding who they are and making that courageous choice to go through that change."

In Static Cling, Rocko is off to look for Ralph (now Rachel) as he tries to get his favorite show The Fatheads (which Rachel created) back on air. Here's also a clip from the special:

I guess it would make sense that Rocko would delve into some more adult themes this time around. After all, its main audience is all mostly adults now. I'd imagine not very many kids remember what Rocko's Modern Life was all about, Rocko having his own nostalgia trip in the movie seems like a meta-commentary on people who grew up in the 90s.

Rocko's Modern Life: Static Cling comes to Netflix this Friday.
