The Siege of Eregion was the main focus of the latest episode of Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power, but one scene that caught fans particularly off guard was the kiss between Galadriel and Elrond.
While fans go heads and tails about what the kiss between the two means for the characters, Inside the Rings of Power, outright asked Morfydd Clark and Robert Aramayo about their reaction to the moment.
Morfydd Clark on Elrond x Galadriel’s Rings of Power Kiss
For context, the scene had Galadriel being held captive by Adar and he demands that Elrond give him Galadriel’s ring Nenya in exchange for her life. Elrond refuses but is then allowed to say goodbye to Galadriel, to which he gives her a kiss.
When asked about this moment in Inside the Rings of Power, Clark said, “[Elrdond’s] definitely being bolder than she’d expect. She’s a little shocked.” Aramayo confirms that the scene was more about him helping Galadriel, saying, “It’s the key, isn’t it?” to which Clark replies, “Yeah, he’s giving her a little pin.”
The two didn’t go over much detail when it came to the kiss, but they do go on about what Galadriel and Elrond mean to each other as friends and Elf kin. Clark continues, “I think [Galadriel] feels so guilty because she clearly messed up kind of monumentally. It’s very kind of sobering for her to be around Elrond because he knows her so well and knows all her secrets and kind of knows the depths of her mistake and her betrayal, really.”
Aramayo continued, “I think with the two of them, it runs so deep, the connection between them that it sort of feels undeniable. It’s a love really. The bond is really strong.”
Elrond and Galadriel by the Third Age
By the time of the Lord of the Rings trilogy, Galadriel and Elrond aren’t together romantically, but the two do preside over two Elven realms that are pretty much next to each other, with Elrond running Rivendell, and Galadriel ruling over Lothlorien.
The two are also members of the White Council, a collective of the wisest characters in Middle-earth. Besides Galadriel and Elrond, the council had also included Glorfindel, Cirdan, and Saruman the White; Radagast the Brown was also a part of the council at one point, but he eventually stopped going to later meetings.
Galadriel’s Husband
Book and lore keepers for Lord of the Rings are also aware that Galadriel has a husband in the form of Celeborn. Celeborn hasn’t appeared in the series yet, but it is said that Galadriel believes that he’s dead; so fans are just waiting for him to make some kind of grand return.
With Sauron and Galadriel being pushed together as the main pairing of the series though, the showrunners are now facing the problem of making sure that Celeborn feels like the right choice for Galadriel in the series. Otherwise, he’s just going to seem like a plain supporting character for Galadriel—like a “malewife”.
