What happened in Rick and Morty Season 5 Episode 2?
In Rick and Morty Episode 2, the episode starts with the Smith family being massacred by a group of alien squids in their home. Just like in the episode of The Ricktantis Mixup, we realize that this isn't the Smith family we've followed in the previous episodes and must be from a different universe.
The scene then moves to another iteration of The Smith family chasing a humanoid called Mr. Wants-to-be-hunted-all-the-time. Naturally, you assume that this is the "real smith family" before they too also die.
The plot begins to expand and we begin to learn that due to Rick having so many enemies across the multiverse, he has created multiple "decoy families" as an attempt to deter potential threats. The problem soon arises when we see that the "Decoy Rick's" who believe themselves to be the genuine article, have also created decoy families, therefore removing the certainty as to which family is real or not.
The plot thickens further when we find that the original squids that we believed to be one of the enemies - are in fact another decoy family masquerading as a threat to kill all the other decoy families.
The plot becomes tangled before Rick decides that there is only one way to solve this and that is to go "Highlander" which means to kill everyone until only one "real family" is left. As the rest of the episode unfolds with all the decoy smith families trying to kill each other.
The last battle ends with everyone dying almost in a spaghetti western style. In a surprising twist, we see that Mr. Wants-to-be-hunted has gone rogue as no one hunted him and kills the last remaining members, including Rick.
The final scene then cuts to the entire Smith family inside Rick's spacecraft insinuating they all went on a "space" road trip, and along the way have bumped back into Space Beth. Space Beth was left as a bit of a cliffhanger in the Season 4 Finale where the entire family has no idea which Beth is the clone or not. Perhaps this will be answered in Episode 3 of this season now that Space Beth has potentially returned?
While in the spacecraft, Rick is notified of the death of the "decoy family" in which the entire family starts in an uproar mirroring the reactions of all the decoy families.
The Episode ends.
Rick and Morty Season 5 Theories, Spoilers, and Leaks
A quick promo clip was released from Adultswim and retweeted by @swimpedia. The title for Episode 3 is "The Rickconvenient Mort" based loosely on The Inconvenient Truth. The promo shows Rick and Morty in what's presumed to be another universe before the weather begins to release acid rain. They are confronted by a Saturday morning cartoon villain type and a female parody of Captain Planet. The title and the promo certainly tease the idea that this could be environmental-themed which wouldn't be the first time in the season. In Episode 1 we saw the topic of the environment being raised by the sexually active ocean god Mr. Nimbus several times.
