Is Rian Johnson's Star Wars Trilogy Still in the Works? Here's the Latest Status

A few years ago, there were reports that Star Wars: The Last Jedi director Rian Johnson is working on a new Star Wars trilogy that will focus on a new story and new characters. But since then, we haven't heard any update regarding the project. Earlier this year, Johnson insisted that it is still in the works. Now, it looks like that is no longer the case.

Per Screen Rant, citing Matthew Beloni's newsletter for Puck, it was reported that Rian Johnson's Star Wars trilogy has been shelved by Lucasfilm due to creative differences similar to what happened on David Benioff and D.B. Weiss' Star Wars trilogy project and the recently-delayed Patty Jenkins' Rogue Squadron movie.

There has been speculation for months that Johnson's trilogy might never see the light of day since there has been no recent update about it beyond the reports years ago. The director is also busy working on the Knives Out sequels which fueled the possibility that the project might not actually happen anymore.

The report comes in the heels of the recent news regarding the indefinite delay of Rogue Squadron due to the creative differences between Jenkins and Lucasfilm. It is unknown if the project is still moving forward, but the December 2023 release date hasn't been pulled off yet by Disney.

Given all the latest development, the question now is what will be the next theatrical Star Wars film? There are two projects that are still in active development: the untitled project directed by Taika Waititi and the untitled project produced by Marvel Studios head Kevin Feige. There have also been rumors recently that Chloe Zhao will direct the latter, but it has been debunked since then.

While Lucasfilm is figuring out what's next for Star Wars on the theatrical film side, they are working on a lot of Star Wars television series for Disney+ including the soon-to-be-released The Book of Boba Fett, Obi-Wan Kenobi, Andor, Ahsoka, and the third season of The Mandalorian.
