Rian Johnson: How Does Star Wars The Last Jedi Compare To The Rest Of The Films?

Though a huge success, Star Wars The Force Awakens still got a bit bashed for almost replicating the entire formula of A New Hope. With Rian Johnson's The Last Jedi, fans were hoping that something a bit new would be brought to the table.

In an interview with Fandango, director Rian Johnson explains just how his movie compares to the rest of the films in the saga. He says:

"The automatic temptation is to say, ‘Well, it's a middle chapter, so it's got kind of that Empire thing.' But at the same time, I really wanted to maintain the same sense of fun that J.J. had in The Force Awakens, that to some extent in Return Of The Jedi, which I was like 10 years old, that was prime for me when that came out—and the sense of playfulness, I think. So when I say Empire, I guess I don't want to give the impression that it's kind of a dark, gloom, and doom. It was also really important to me that this was a fun adventure. I don't know, it's a mixed bag of a lot of different stuff. And, hopefully, some unique stuff, too."

You have to admit, even if the prequels had shoddy dialogue, George Lucas still tried his best to set it apart from the original movies. They all looked and felt different, giving us more of the Star Wars universe to see. Though I did love Force Awakens, a lot of it seemed all too familiar.

Lucasfilm seems to know what it's doing with their movies, and with Kathleen Kennedy's experience, The Last Jedi should be one hell of a thrill ride. Hopefully it will give us a fresh new narrative that doesn't feel too similar to the original trilogy. I loved the Battle of Hoth, but I really don't need to see an ‘updated' version of it onscreen.

Star Wars: The Last Jedi comes out Dec. 15.
