Renée Elise Goldsberry on How Quellcrist Falconer is the True Star of Altered Carbon Season 2

If you've watched the second season of Altered Carbon, chances are you've been blown away by the truth about Quellcrist Falconer. Although Takeshi Kovacs (Anthony Mackie) is supposed to be the main character in the Netflix series, Season 2 has proven that the real hero is none other than the woman he continues to search for. Renée Elise Goldsberry opened up about Falconer's true role on the show and possibly confirmed that the future of the show is all about her character.

Goldsberry spoke to io9 about how the first season completely blindsided viewers when it came to Falconer, who was initially introduced as the perfect woman who should have been there to support her man.

"There's this really beautiful, amazing apparition, right? Who says the right thing and fights—no one can touch her. It's this figment of the imagination of this leading man," Goldsberry said. "He's a survivor, and she's the manifestation of what he needs to survive at all times. He takes all of his memories of her and he creates this thing that he needs to move on. So she exists to support his journey in season one. That is not the case in Season 2."

The second season didn't waste time in revealing the truth about Falconer, that she was the one who was on a more important mission and that Kovacs needed to be there to support her.

"Her journey in Season 2 is not about supporting him, so he's gonna have to chase her and figure out what's going on with her. That's a really wonderful evolution for, specifically for a female character to have. So often the lead—the female lead in any show, whether we're talking theater, film, or whatever—is always in support of what the male character is doing," Goldsberry said.

So what does this mean for the next season of Altered Carbon? The series has not yet been confirmed for Season 3. But if it is, we're already looking forward to Falconer taking center stage and maybe Kovacs can come along for the ride.

Altered Carbon Season 2 is currently streaming on Netflix.
