Queen Elizabeth was a self-confessed dog lover. Throughout her lifetime, she reportedly owned approximately 30 corgis, and by 2015, she decided that she wouldn't breed any more puppies because she didn't want to leave them behind when she passes away.

Queen Elizabeth's Corgis Muick, Sandy Were With Her When She Died

However, Queen Elizabeth's passing at 96 on Sept. 8 meant that she still left her dogs behind. But new reports revealed that the late monarch spent her final moments with her corgis, Muick and Sandy by her side.

Reports revealed that Muick and Sandy, who are now living with Prince Andrew at the Royal Lodge, were with the queen when she took her last breath. The two adorable dogs also made an appearance during the queen's funeral last week, according to Daily Mail.

Queen Elizabeth's Corgis Know That She's No Longer Around

While speaking with Entertainment Tonight, animal psychologist Dr. Roger Mugford said that the dogs are aware that they will no longer see the queen again. But over time, the dogs' grief would change because they will also grow to love their new master.

"I'm sure they knew that Her Majesty was in decline and they will have missed her. I don't doubt there will be serious changes in the grief, because they were so used to being cared for by other members of the household and, of course, by Prince Andrew, who was present at the death and is taking over their care now," he said.

Queen Elizabeth Was Very Hands-On With All Her Dogs

Mugford also said that it must have been a wonderful thing for the queen to be surrounded by her beloved dogs up until her death.

"It was so lovely that, in her last couple of years, she had two little corgis and other dogs around her because there's no doubt that any of us, at any stage in our life but particularly when our life feels like it's declining and stressful... to be able to reach and stroke and be loved by an uncritical admirer, which is a dog, is a great comfort," he said.

Mugford also had the chance to witness the queen's interactions with her dogs. And he revealed that the late monarch is just like every other pet owner out there.

"There's no doubt there that the queen loved her dogs dearly. [She had] a well-rounded affection for her dogs. They were her great leisure pursuit. She talked to them in silly ways we all talk to our dogs. It was the brighter side of her life. When I was with her, she was incredibly animated when talking about her dogs, their individual personalities," he said.

Mugford revealed that the queen was in charge of feeding her dogs, and they would line up in a semi-circle and wait for Her Majesty to put their bowl on the floor. Once all 10 dogs have their bowls in front of them, that's the only time they would start eating.

Following the queen's death, Prince William also assured royal fans that her dogs are well cared for.

"They're being looked after fine. They're two very friendly corgis. They've got a good home. They're being looked after very well," he said (via Page Six).
