Queen Elizabeth was known for her sense of humor. At one point, she reportedly asked her former daughter-in-law Sarah Ferguson why she wanted to marry her son, Prince Andrew.

Queen Elizabeth Wondered Why Sarah Ferguson Wanted To Marry Prince Andrew?

Many sources claimed that the Duke of York was the Queen's favorite son. She even chose him to be his escort at the memorial service for Prince Philip earlier this year, which raised eyebrows among royal fans as their sighting came just a few weeks after he settled the sexual assault charges against him in the United States.

According to Richard Kay, editor-at-large of The Daily Mail, the late Queen once asked Ferguson "why on Earth" she decided to marry Prince Andrew.

"On one occasion, exasperated by the behavior of Prince Andrew, she sighed to her then daughter-in-law, Sarah Ferguson: 'I am so glad you have taken Andrew off our hands, but why on earth did you do it?'" Kay wrote, Showbiz CheatSheet reported. "The laughter that followed the remark hid the shadow that was already stealing across the marriage."

Many took the Queen's statement as a joke, as she was known for her sense of humor. The former monarch reportedly considered humor a "priceless regal skill."

What Happened To Sarah Ferguson And Prince Andrew's Marriage?

Sarah Ferguson and Prince Andrew's marriage ended in divorce 10 years after they tied the knot. They exchanged "I do's" in 1986 and finalized their divorce in 1996.

Her toegate scandal was reportedly the reason for their split. Millionaire John Bryan was caught on camera allegedly sucking Ferguson's toe during a vacation in St. Tropez.

The scandal was featured on Netflix's The Crown. However, Bryan vehemently denied the rumors about his relationship with the Duchess of York.

"If you go back 30 years, it's all based on lies," he said, noting that "of course, it didn't happen that way", Express reported.

He noted that they chose the area because it offered "absolute privacy." However, he also stressed that Prince Andrew and Ferguson's kids, Princess Eugenie and Princess Beatrice, were there at the time of the incident.

"We used to play fun games, make-believe games. On this day we were playing Cinderella and I said, 'Look, let's kiss Mummy's toes,'" Bryan recounted.

"It was part of the game. I did it first and then I think one of the girls, probably Beatrice, did it. It was totally innocent, a beautiful family moment of love."

He claimed that it was a "beautiful" moment presented as a "despicable" story. He also slammed the reports about the photo calling them "twisted, sick, fabricated narrative."

"They sexualized something so innocent," he added.

Following Ferguson and Prince Andrew's divorce, the royal exes remain good friends. They even still live together at Royal Lodge in Windsor.

How Was Sarah Ferguson's Relationship With Queen Elizabeth After The Divorce?

Ferguson and Queen Elizabeth had maintained a good relationship following the former's divorce from the latter's son. When the late monarch passed away, Prince Andrew's ex-wife paid tribute to her former mother-in-law on social media.

"I am heartbroken by the passing of Her Majesty the Queen," Ferguson wrote on Instagram. "She leaves behind an extraordinary legacy: the most fantastic example of duty and service and steadfastness, and a constant steadying presence as our head of state for more than 70 years. She has given her whole life selflessly to the people of the UK and the Commonwealth."

"To me, she was the most incredible mother-in-law and friend. I will always be grateful to her for the generosity she showed me in remaining close to me even after my divorce. I will miss her more than words can express."
