PSY opened up about his Summer Swag concerts being a new K-pop culture amid the genre's widespread success globally.

Unlike the usual K-pop concerts, PSY opted to create his own festival by doing the Summer Swag concerts every year since 2011. The July to August concert series has been active for a decade, only missing a few years when the COVID-19 pandemic started.

Why PSY Believes His Summer Swag Concerts Became New Korean Culture

Following the release of his PSY Summer Swag 2022, the Gangnam Style hitmaker held an online group interview on Tuesday (per Korea JoongAng Daily), during which he spoke about his concerts being the new Korean culture.

"I believe my 'Summer Swag' concerts, which always feature a soaked audience because we blast water from the stage, have become a culture of its own," he said. "I am very grateful that I was able to create this cultural experience for my fans."

PSY has been holding his Summer swag concerts for years in South Korea's major cities, including Daejeon, Seoul, Gwangju, Daegu, and Busan. The Daddy singer said he always gives his best in his concerts, adding that he maximizes his throat and body at each show to give his best to his fans.

The singer, who founded P Nation, revealed that he got inspired to make the Summer Swag concerts after seeing Korea's World Cup street cheering matches.

Although talking about K-pop only highlights bands and idols, PSY said that expanding the genre would allow people to explore different kinds of music and K-pop acts.

Summer Swag 2022 Suffers Criticisms

While PSY is yet to launch the 2023 edition of his concert, his Summer Swag 2022 suffered criticisms due to several issues.

Since the concert uses water to drench the performer and the attendees, the public called out the Gentleman hitmaker for using too much drinkable water during the 2022 show. They also condemned PSY for holding the concert despite the potential risks of spreading COVID-19 again.

Another complaint involved the damages inflicted by the attendees to the venue. Reports noted that there were serious damages after a large stage fixture for the Summer Swag concert was removed.

Others also slammed the organizers for causing a nuisance due to the show.
