Princess Diana was a style icon. When she was still alive, she was a favorite subject among photographers across the globe. After all, the Princess of Wales had a beautiful face, and she was also quite fashionable. Not to mention, Prince William and Prince Harry’s mom also had her way of charming the cameras even during times when she was already struggling behind closed doors.

But there was one interesting thing about Princess Diana’s fashion sense and love for a particular accessory. Most often than not, Prince Charles’ ex-wife was photographed carrying a clutch bag, especially when she was attending formal events.

Of course, there was no denying the fact that Princess Diana’s clutch bags always complemented her outfits. But there was also one clever reason why she was always photographed with the bag in tow.

Princess Diana Employed A Clever Style Trick With Her Clutch Bags

According to fashion expert Miranda Holder, the mom of two used to carry a clutch bag almost everywhere she went because she used it to cover her cleavage from the paparazzi.

Every time Princess Diana would get out of the car, a massive group of paparazzi was always waiting for her. There were times when Princess Diana was wearing an outfit with a low neckline, and if she didn’t cover her cleavage with her handbag, the paparazzi would’ve been able to take photos of her private part.

“The humble clutch bag is an elegant choice loved by the royal family. But, did you know, it has another secret use? Clutch bags are recently used by the likes of Kate Middleton and Meghan Markle as an elegant addition to their outfit. Princess Diana was also a devotee, but this was for another very clever reason. Princess Diana would regularly use her clutch bag to shield her cleavage from the paparazzi when getting in and out of a car. That is how a princess does it,” she said (via Express).

Fashion Designer Revealed How She And Princess Diana Used To Call Her Clutch Bags ‘Cleavage Bags’

Holder isn’t the first person to talk about Princess Diana’s clever style trick. While speaking with The Telegraph, British fashion designer Anya Hindmarsh revealed that she and the late royal used to call her clutch bags “cleavage bags” because of the purpose that they served.

“She was a loyal customer and a lot of fun. She would come and see us with no bodyguards or any fuss. We used to laugh when we designed what she called her 'cleavage bags,' little satin clutches which she would cover her cleavage with when she stepped out of cars,” Hindmarsh said.

Princess Diana Might Have Started Covering Her Cleavage Using Her Clutch Bag After Her First Engagement With Prince Charles

Indeed, there is a slew of photos of Princess Diana carrying a clutch bag over her chest. According to Express, it is possible that the Princess of Wales started doing the clutch bag trick after her first engagement with Prince Charles. After all, the outing proved to be too stressful for her.

“I remember my first engagement so well. So excited. I got this black dress from the Emanuels and I thought it was OK because girls my age wore this dress. Black, to me, was the smartest color you could possibly have at the age of 19. It was a real grown-up dress. I was quite big-chested then, and they (the Press) all got frightfully excited. It was a horrendous occasion. I didn't know whether to go out of the door first. I didn't know whether your handbag should be in your left hand or your right hand. I was terrified, really — at the time everything was all over the place. I remember that evening so well. I was terrified — nearly sick,” Princess Diana told royal biographer Andrew Morton.
