Princess Charlotte is starting to make a name for herself. She’s charming, adorable, and hilarious according to some royal fans and royal experts. But even if she’s the daughter of the future king of Britain, Princess Charlotte wouldn’t have been styled as a princess if not for what Queen Elizabeth did.

Queen Elizabeth’s Letters Patent Benefited Princess Charlotte

According to royal historian Marlene Koenig, the queen issued a Letters Patent while Kate Middleton was pregnant with Prince George. This ensured that all of Prince William and Middleton’s children would be styled as a prince or a princess.

“If Charlotte had been born first under the 1917 Letters Patent, because she was a great-granddaughter in the male line, and only the eldest son of the eldest son of the Prince of Wales was entitled to be HRH... then she would have been The Lady Charlotte Mountbatten-Windsor. So, the Queen fixed that little issue,” Koenig said (via Express).

Queen Elizabeth Issues Succession To The Crown Act For Prince William, Kate Middleton’s Children

Other than the Letters Patent, the birth of Prince William and Middleton’s children also signaled some changes in how the British monarchy was structured. In 2013, the Succession to the Crown Act was passed to ensure that the gender of a newborn royal wouldn’t influence her position in the Order of Succession.

If the Succession to the Crown Act wasn’t passed, Princess Charlotte wouldn’t be fourth in line to the throne. Instead, she would come after her younger brother, Prince Louis simply because she’s a girl.

However, the Succession to the Crown Act only included royals born after Oct. 28, 2011. This means that the order of succession of the royals that were born years before was not altered.

Queen Elizabeth Had No Plans To Style Prince Harry’s Children As Prince Or Princess

But there also seems to be some kind of controversy surrounding the Letters Patent that the queen issued. According to Koenig, the queen issued the Letters Patent before Prince George’s birth to make sure that Prince Harry’s future children wouldn’t get royal titles.

“The point I made even then is that the Queen changed it to all of the children of the eldest son of the Prince of Wales. Now, if Harry's children were going to be royal... if the plans had been for Harry, who was not even married at the time, to change it, why didn't the Queen say the children of all the sons of the Prince of Wales? She just capped it as the eldest son. So, right then and there, you knew that Harry’s kids were never going to be royal. So, technically, Archie is Earl of Dumbarton and Lilibet is Lady Lilibet Mountbatten-Windsor, technically that's who they are, and that was a point of change. When Charles becomes King, I do think there's going to be an official change.” she said.
