Prince Louis is one of the youngest members of the royal family. He’s also the third and youngest child of Prince William and Kate Middleton. But he’s only the fifth-youngest grandchild of Queen Elizabeth and the third youngest grandson of Prince Charles.

Following his birth four years ago, Prince William and Kate Middleton decided to give Prince Louis a lengthy name, and he also received a royal title: His Royal Highness Prince Louis Arthur Charles of Cambridge. He’s currently fifth in line to the throne.

Prince Louis’s Surname Will Become Wales When Prince Charles Is King

Prince Louis and his two older siblings, Prince George and Princess Charlotte, are all using the surname Cambridge right now. After all, their parents are styled as the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge. But in the coming years, there will be a major change to their surname.

After Prince Charles ascends the throne, he will most likely pass on his Prince of Wales title to his eldest son. Prince William and Middleton will then be known as the new Prince and Princess of Wales. This also means that Prince William and Middleton’s three children will now use the surname Wales instead of Cambridge, according to Express.

Prince Louis, Princess Charlotte Could Use Mountbatten-Windsor Later On

However, this isn’t the only time that the siblings would change their surname and royal titles. According to Express, when Prince George is styled as the new Prince of Wales, Princess Charlotte and Prince Louis would use the Mountbatten-Windsor family name.

Mountbatten-Windsor is the surname used by Prince Harry and Meghan Markle’s two children, Archie and Lilibet. Both of them didn’t get a royal title following their birth. But it’s unclear if they won’t be styled as HRH later on when Prince Charles becomes king.

And just like Prince William and Prince Harry, their children will also receive a dukedom in the coming years and after they tie the knot. There are whispers that Princess Charlotte would be styled as Princess Royal, taking after Princess Anne.

Prince Louis Could Inherit The Duke Of York Title

According to Express, Princess Charlotte will only inherit Princess Anne’s title following her death and if Prince William is already king. If Princess Anne is still alive when Prince William ascends the throne, Princess Charlotte would have to wait until she inherits the title.

And Prince Louis would reportedly be styled as the Duke of York, following in Prince Andrew’s footsteps. The title is traditionally given to the second son of the monarch.

However, it is important to note that the handing over of royal titles usually depends on whoever is king or queen. As such, Prince Charles and Prince William are the ones to decide which royal titles will be given to who when the time comes.
