Prince Charles has been dubbed as the longest-serving king-in-waiting because he’s still waiting for the day when he can finally ascend the throne. Even at the age of 73, there’s still no indication that he would soon be crowned as king. After all, Queen Elizabeth is still the reigning monarch, and she doesn’t have any plans to abdicate.
Prince Charles Could Abdicate Shortly After He Ascends The Throne
But according to royal commentator Jeremy Vine, Prince Charles won’t follow in the queen’s footsteps of staying as the British monarch for decades. In fact, Vine predicts that Prince Charles will abdicate from the throne shortly after he ascends it to give way to Prince William.
“The monarch is a symbol of unity. The queen, when we’ve been in a great crisis, think of the covid crisis, she was word perfect when she spoke. Even talking about we’ll meet again. I think Charles hasn’t learned at the feet of the great monarch. William will learn too, but I suspect that after the queen, I suspect Charles may do something the queen never did and abdicate. This is so that we would have a younger heir,” he said (via Express).
Prince William Cannot Leapfrog Prince Charles To The Throne
As of writing, some royal fans and royal experts have also been speculating on the possibility of Prince William leapfrogging Prince Charles to the throne. Since the Duke of Cambridge is more popular and much younger than Prince Charles, there are claims that he would be a better monarch.
However, royal biographer Penny Junor said that there is very little chance that Prince William will become king before Prince Charles.
“Under common law, Prince Charles will automatically become king the moment the queen dies,” Junor said.
Prince Charles Won’t Abdicate For Prince William Because He’s Waited Decades To Become King
Royal author Tina Brown also said that it’s unlikely for Prince Charles to abdicate from the throne to give way to Prince William. After all, he has been waiting for the day when he could ascend the throne for decades.
“Why does anybody think that? I mean, Charles is so desperate for this freaking job. I mean, you know, he’s waited 50 years for this. I mean, there’s just no way,” she said (via Geo. tv).
Brown also reacted to the claims that Prince Charles is not as popular as Prince William, so he may not be as effective as the latter when he becomes the monarch.
“He was a kind of shock absorber for the next reign. And I kind of think that's what will happen in Charles. A lot of people are very pessimistic about Charles taking over. I actually am not one of those. Because we know too much about Charles. He has always been something of an Eeyore feeling. One of his favorite mottos is, oh, just my luck. Do you know? However, I actually think he’ll surprise people. I think he will,” she said.
