Pokemon Player Completes Pokedex Without Getting Any Badges

Matthew Johnson managed to fill up his entire Pokedex in Pokemon X without earning a single badge, Kotaku reports. Without earning any badges in Pokemon, you can't progress in the game, so this is quite a feat. But Johnson was determined to triumph, even if he couldn't leave the starting area of the game.

Johnson set several rules for himself when embarking on this quest two years ago. He would not trade Pokemon with himself using multiple games. He would not accept hacked Pokemon. He would not use any cheating devices. And he would not trade more than ten Pokemon at a time.

Johnson used the games "Wonder Trade" feature to gain a lot of his Pokemon. "Wonder Trade" allows you to trade Pokemon with other players, but it's completely random, so a player never knows what Pokemon they'll get. " Sometimes I could trade 15-20 times before I got something ‘good' or useful to me," Johnson said.

He estimates he conducted around seven thousand trades over a year. He would then train and evolve those Pokemon using only the game's starting area.

This method alone was not enough though. Soon Johnson was down to his last Pokemon and out of Pokeballs and cash in-game. He signed up for Pokemon Global Link, which gave him Pokemiles for trades. The Pokemon could then be traded in for valuable items and Pokeballs. He also used the Pokemon Trades sub-reddit.

Finally, after 837 hours of gaming, Johnson completed his regional Pokedex. His final Pokemon was a Vanilluxe.

I'm amazed he was able to do that. I would never have the patience. What do you think of Johnson's feat? Do you think you could do it?
