Pokemon Go Finally Gets Ditto, But There’s a Catching to Capturing It

After so many hints of the shape-shifter ‘mon, Niantic Labs has confirmed that, indeed, Ditto has been discovered.

In a recent blog post, the developer confirmed that trainers are actually reporting appearances of Ditto. In the actual game, there's a catch to well, catching your very own Ditto.

What you need to do is actually go and catch several other very common Pokemon to get Ditto. Because true to its name, Ditto can transform into any ‘mon, and it won't just show up on your game map already looking like the coveted Ditto that it is. Instead, you'll have to catch some very common Pokemon before it unveils itself—that is, if you happen to actually catch a Ditto in disguise.

"Ditto has been known to disguise itself as other Pokemon, so keep an eye out, some Pokemon may actually be Ditto and when you capture them, there's a chance that Ditto will reveal itself. If you do encounter a Pokemon that is Ditto in disguise, the Pokemon in that specific encounter will also reveal itself as Ditto for other Trainers."

At the very least, players over at The Silph Road's Reddit have already documented that, indeed, it is real. One players has even noted that he can be used as a buddy for 3km to get a Ditto candy.

When heading off to Gyms for training or battles, Ditto will act the same way that it does in the franchise—copy the appearance, types, and moves of the first Pokemon it lays its eyes on. What's more, it will remain that copied Pokemon for the rest of the Gym battles. So far, in Gym battles, the Ditto does transform at a lower CP, so it may help to power up your Ditto before pushing it to battle.

This may be the most cunning move that Niantic has delivered for Pokemon Go. Not only do we have a new addition to the Pokedex, but it can turn out to be quite a powerful one, with enough grinding. And then here's the ultimate task of playing through common Pokemon just to see if it will transform.

Very cunning indeed. Since the Thanksgiving weekend event will kick off, this will be the best time to give Pokemon Go another spin. You might just be lucky enough to encounter your first Ditto on the first day of hunting.
