Peacemaker has become one of the breakout TV shows this year so far and a lot of critics and the audience are praising it in different areas such as its ballsy storytelling, humor, heart, and the performances of the cast. As the first season was airing, a lot of fans are wondering if it's all just a one-off or if they will be getting another season. Now, we finally have the official announcement that we've been waiting to hear.
Yesterday, hours before the first season finale premiered on midnight, HBO Max announced that Peacemaker has been renewed for a second season. James Gunn will write and direct all episodes. The renewal comes after the series became the no. 1 new original streaming series for social engagement on Twitter across all of television and remained the no. 1 social show YTD across Max Originals on multiple social platforms. However, there is no release window indicated yet for the second season.
"The brilliance of James Gunn once again shines with Peacemaker," HBO Max Head of Original Content Sarah Aubrey said in a statement. "He took this character, brought to life by the inimitable John Cena, and created an exceptional series that’s simultaneously thrilling, hilarious and heartfelt, showcasing the humanity beneath this team of misfits living in a superhuman world. As the first original DC show to have its series premiere on HBO Max, we are thrilled that the viewers agreed to give peace a f***ing chance."
Gunn said regarding the renewal: "Creating Peacemaker has been one of the true highlights of my life, both professionally and otherwise, with John Cena and the incredible creative team around me, as well as our partners at HBO Max. To have something we all love so much be loved by the audience in turn has been a wonderful experience. I can’t wait for folks to see where Team Peacemaker goes in Season Two!"
John Cena also added: "I am incredibly honored and humbled by the response to Peacemaker and the experience of playing this character. Thank you to James Gunn, Peter Safran, HBO Max, the crew, and my castmates who worked tirelessly to make this unforgettable series."
It is great to hear that we now have an official announcement that the series is getting a second season. It's not surprising to hear the news since the first season has been a huge success and it is inevitable that it will get another installment especially since Gunn and Cena have expressed in previous interviews that they are game to do a second season.
While The Suicide Squad didn't do well at the box office, it has started gaining a new following and Peacemaker certainly helped the film get more attention from the public. With the success of the series and the plans of another spinoff series surrounding another The Suicide Squad character, it looks like Gunn's side of the DCEU is here to stay and we might see him get more involved in the franchise now. Whatever his plans are for the second season of Peacemaker and the other DC projects that he's cooking up, the fans will definitely be there for it.
The first season of Peacemaker is currently streaming on HBO Max, with the season finale premiering today.
