After being shelved for years, Polygram Entertainment has confirmed that Sony’s Ozzy and Sharon Osbourne biopic—chronicling the extraordinary love story between the Black Sabbath icon and his manager—is still heading to the big screen.

Sony first announced the project in 2021, revealing plans to make a movie based on the heavy metal legend’s relationship with his wife, whom he married in 1982.

Despite numerous challenges, including a brief separation in 2016 before eventually reuniting, their romance is undoubtedly a story worth telling.

Though details about Ozzy and Sharon’s biopic remain under wraps, the couple’s son Jack, who also serves as the film’s producer, told Rolling Stone in 2020 that it would cover their lives from 1979 to 1996.

“I can’t say too much, but the film is in active development,” he said at the time.

Ozzy, on the other hand, believed it would show how they “met, fell in love, and married.”

“She’s my other half. She grew up a lot with me, and I grew up a lot with her,” he continued.

For her part, Sharon wanted the film to tell “a story that everybody can relate to.”

“You don’t have to be a fan of the music, because it’s a story about a survivor. No matter what life throws at you, you pick yourself up and you start again,” she explained. “It’s just an amazing story of overcoming everything that’s thrown at you in your life.”

She also expected it to be different from other rock biopics, such as Elton John’s Rocketman and Freddie Mercury’s Bohemian Rhapsody.

“It’s not like any other story,” she added. “It’s not like, ‘rock & roll, crazy, and now I’m a granddad.’ It’s so much more than that.”

Sharon even wanted it to be grittier than Bohemian Rhapsody, which she described as “a Hallmark rock movie” for being “squeaky clean” and tailored to a “younger generation,” with its story’s timing altered.

“Our film will be a lot more real,” Sharon continued. “We don’t want it to be squeaky, shiny clean and all of that. We’re not making it for kids. It’s an adult movie for adults.”

Sony is developing Ozzy and Sharon’s biopic with Polygram Entertainment and Osbourne Media—the Osbournes’ media label—and Universal Music Group’s film and television division.

In addition to Jack, Sharon and Aimee Osbourne are also set to produce the film alongside Polygram’s Michele Anthony and David Blackman, and Sony’s Andrea Giannetti.

Lee Hall, who wrote Rocketman, will pen the script; however, no director is currently attached to the project.

Back in 2021, Variety revealed that the movie would feature music from both Black Sabbath and Ozzy’s solo career.

Ozzy passed away on July 22, just over two weeks after Black Sabbath’s final live concert. Known as the Prince of Darkness, he died at the age of 76.

His death certificate, obtained by The New York Times, revealed that he died of a heart attack “out of hospital” and had been suffering from coronary artery disease and Parkinson’s disease.

Given his legendary status and the timing of his passing, many are surely anticipating the release of Ozzy and Sharon’s biopic.
