Why was the final season of Ozark split in 2 parts?

Ozark Season 4

During an interview with TheWrap, showrunner Chris Mundy explained why the fourth and final season of Ozark was split in two parts:

"We always thought five [seasons] was the outside number,” Mundy told TheWrap. “It just felt like after that – we didn’t want to repeat ourselves, we didn’t want the show to feel like it was continuing because it was a TV show and it had to continue. So really the decision has always been between is it four [seasons] or is it five [seasons], and then Netflix hit upon the idea of saying, ‘We’ll do four but we’ll make it long and split it in this way,’ and that felt perfect.”

As Mundy and the writers began working on Ozark Season 4, they realized that they needed more than 10 episodes to wrap up the story.

“We could make these seven [episodes] feel complete and make the second seven feel complete, even though it’s all one continuum. I think 10 wouldn’t have been enough to tell the story in the way we wanted to. So any number over 10 and under 20 was gonna be good in my book.”

Ozark Season 4, Part 2

Plot details for Ozark Season 4, Part 2 are still being kept under wraps, but we expect the final episodes to wrap-up all the loose ends of the story because this season will be the last. The first part leaves numerous questions to be answered in Part 2.

Now that Ruth knows who killed Wyatt, what will she do next? Will she be able to survive if she goes against the cartel? The trailer shows that she's after Javier, and there's footage showing that she's shooting him with a gun, but could that just be a dream?

What will Javi do as the new head of the Navarro cartel? And what about Omar Navarro, who's still sitting in a cell?

How will the Byrdes find a way out of this mess, and will they finally be able to escape the control of the cartel and find peace in the end? Will Jonah continue to rebel?

What about the private investigator's hunt for the Navarro lawyer Helen Pierce's body? What else will he discover?

Navarro is already in prison, but expect him to make more moves. Speaking to EW, Mundy warns: "He certainly won't trust the Byrdes, but they're a necessary evil in his life. So we obviously wanted him to be as pinned down as he possibly could be, but you haven't seen the last of him, for sure.”

Based on what we've seen in the trailer, it looks like he will find a way to escape.
