Though not as popular as the sports anime genre, there have been several cars and racing anime over the years.

Perhaps the most popular one is Initial D, the anime that further boosted the popularity of drifting and the JDM scene.

Unlike Initial D which is based on a popular manga, Overtake! is an original anime.

Not to mention that this upcoming series is based on professional sports car racing which should make it an interesting show for F1 fans.

You can check out the new trailer for it here:

Interestingly, the show doesn’t have a racing driver as a protagonist. Instead, it follows Koya Madoka, a freelance photographer.

The series follows Madoka as he struggles with a slump in his career. In his quest to get his mojo back, he meets Haruka Asahina, an F4 driver with an independent streak.

While the trailer shows off the anime’s open-wheel racing action, it is not a Formula 1 anime.

Instead, it is based on Formula 4 or F4 racing which is one of the first steps in the long path to F1.

Given the renewed popularity of F1 all over the world, Overtake! should pique the interest of many racing fans.

Though aside from F1 lovers, the show also has a cast that anime fans will likely be interested in.

Specifically, the show’s cast features popular VAs, including Katsuyuki Konishi (Tengen in Demon Slayer), Tasuku Hatanaka (Denki in My Hero Academia), and Reina Ueda (Lemon in Mashle), among others.

Meanwhile, the show will be animated by TROYCA, the studio behind shows such as Idolish7, Aldnoah.Zero, and Re:Creators.

Overtake! will premiere in October 2023. For now, there’s no word yet on a specific release date, though it is expected to begin in the first or second week of October.

There’s also no announcement yet on which platform the series will be released outside Japan.
