Oscar Isaac's Spider-Man 2099 Won't Tell Jokes in Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse

Just when Spider-Man fans haven't moved on yet with last year's Spider-Man: No Way Home's dive into the multiverse and the iconic three-generation reunion of Peter Parkers, the long-anticipated sequel to Sony's Oscar-winning Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse was recently announced at CinemaCon 2022.

Sony unveiled the sequel title, Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse, which was instantly followed by the threequel's surprising title reveal, Spider-Man: Beyond The Spider-Verse.

Spider-Man: Across The Spider-Verse will follow Miles Morales (Shameik Moore) who will once again team up with different Spider-People across different universes to fend off villains. Morales will reunite with Gwen Stacey Spider-Woman (Hailee Steinfeld) and Peter B. Parker's Spider-Man (Jake Johnson). Miles is also set to meet alternate versions of the web-slinging hero, most notably Jessica Drew's Spider-Woman (Issa Rae) and Miguel O'Hara's futuristic Spider-Man 2099 (Oscar Isaac).

With Spider-Man: Across The Spider-Verse slated for June 2, 2023, it will serve as part 1 of a two-part story, while Spider-Man: Beyond The Spider-Verse will premiere in March 2024.

Oscar Isaac's futuristic Spider-Man 2099 was first introduced in Into the Spider-Verse's post-credit scene where Isaac's Spider-Man 2099 made his first multiverse jump deciding to travel into a dimension featuring the Spider-Man from the original 1967 TV series.

While fans are waiting for Spider-Man 2099's return, Oscar Isaac opens up on his character's personality as a web-slinging vigilante. In an interview with Screen Rant, the actor revealed that Spider-Man 2099 "doesn't have a sense of humor," which hints that he won't have any fun interaction with the rest of the Spider-People in the upcoming sequel.

Isaac explained, "It's been really fun working on that with Phil Lord and Kemp Powers. The thing I can say is, what makes this character so funny is that he's the one Spider-Man that doesn't have a sense of humor. Because all of them act like-- they're like wisecracks, right? Everybody wisecracks, except this guy, just doesn't. He's a very serious Spider-Man."

Isaac's Spider-Man 2099 portrayal must be really serious. Aside from his character being quickly annoyed with his 1967 counterpart, the first 15 minutes of Across The Spider-Verse reveals Spider-Man 2099 fighting Vulture in Gwen Stacey's universe before calling Jessica Drew's Spider-Woman for backup. However, Isaac's comment that the lack of humor might make his character so funny hints at a potential comedic element for the upcoming sequel.

Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse will premiere in theaters on June 2, 2023.
