This time, Netflix brings a new light to Baku Yumemakura’s novel with an anime adaptation featuring two handsome bishounen, Abe Seimei and Minamoto Hiromasa, making Onmyoji the new perfect anime for BL lovers.

The Onmyoji Anime Features Handsome Protagonists BL Fans Would Love
Set in the Heian Period, the Onmyoji anime revolves around the best Onmyoji of his time, Abe Seimei.
In case you’re not aware, an onmyoji is someone who is intimately familiar with spirits, yokais, the yin and yang, humanity’s fate, the movement of stars, destiny, the past and future, and all things supernatural.
Some would call him an illusionist or even a shaman, but that’s not exactly right.
Interestingly, the current onmyoji has the same set of superior skills and abilities that previous users have, but he doesn’t have the same passion and sympathy for the mundane lives of humans.
Abe Seimei is distinguished by his playful and cunning character, often manipulating humans for his own personal interests.
His views changed when Minamoto Hiromasa, Emperor Daigo’s grandson, visited him on his own premises.
As the plot unfolds, Seimei agrees to become Hiromasa’s partner in taking down troublesome demons that walk in the face of the earth.
They became partners-in-crime, all the while dealing with strong opponents like Ashiya Doman, Seimei’s greatest rival.
The Onmyoji anime adapts some stories from Baku Yumemakura’s novel of the same name, which was originally published in September 1986.
The Onmyoji Anime’s Historical, Supernatural, and Fantasy Setting Exude a Perfect BL Vibe
The Onmyoji anime is a historical, supernatural, and fantasy anime series. It is historical as it features two Japanese historical figures, Abe Seimei and Minamoto Hiromasa.
In real life, Abe Seimei was termed the Merlin the Magician of Japan, while Minamoto Hiromasa was a nobleman and a gagaku musician during the Heian period.
The Onmyoji anime is both a supernatural and fantasy anime because it includes supernatural and fantasy plot elements like spirits, demons, yokais, monsters, and characters with exaggerated powers and abilities.
Onmyoji Is Not a BL Anime Despite Boy x Boy Action
There’s a lot of boy-x-boy action in the series, but this doesn’t mean that Onmyoji is a BL anime.
It’s worth noting that Onmyoji has the perfect characters and setting to be considered a BL anime, but we will not cross that border for now.
The character designs of Onmyoji scream BL, at least in the eyes of a BL fan like me. What’s more, there’s a lot of teasing between the main characters that will surely satisfy your BL needs!
The dynamic between Abe Seimei and Minamoto Hiromasa will delight BL fans. They are partners in crime, but they also bicker like husband and wife most of the time.
Their contrast in personalities also adds to their chemistry, which BL fans will immediately notice and feel.
We’re certain that Abe Seimei and Minamoto Hiromasa will attract a lot of fangirls who will produce fanfiction and discussion threads about their close relationship.
It will not take long before we see everyone dropping their fan art as well.
At the end of the day, it’s not unusual for fans to ship two beautiful male characters together, after all.
