One Piece Film Gold Staff Share Their Development Experience

One Piece Film Gold has become a major hit in Japan. And considering the fan base abroad, it's bound to pick up the pace once the movie hits US theaters.

Looking at a closer look at the staff and the production crew behind the hit movie (via Anime News Network), director Hiroaki Miyamoto, character designer and animation director Masayuki Sato, and producer Hiroyuki Sakurada talked about their experiences when creating the movie.

Miyamoto has been part of the franchise for six years, which gave him the rights to be one of those working on the series' movies. However, even when the crew are already familiar with the franchise as a whole, Miyamoto revealed that One Piece Film Gold was an entirely different beast of its own, down to the wide range of audience that it was meant for.

Still, that's not to say that they aren't taking inspirations from the original source. According to Sakurada, the team had tried to get as much as possible from Oda as far as the creative process goes.

"We have to think like he thinks and put those thoughts into every One Piece production… Oda has been involved since the beginning: screenplay, character design, even the music and voices used for the movie."

Indeed, the scope of work done on One Piece Film Gold has been expansive. Miyamoto shared that they conducted 2,000 cuts and 76,000 key animations for the film, which is a whopping increase from the 300 cuts and 4,000 key animations needed for a single chapter of One Piece TV.

Let it never be said that creating anime is easy. Fans can look forward to the US release of One Piece Film Gold, as well as the home video release with a very cool extra.
