Not a DC Aficionado? No Worries, Shazam! Will Be a Standalone Film

If there is one common criticism the DCEU and MCU have received, it's that some movies no longer feel standalone. You can't watch Avengers: Infinity War without seeing every film after the first Avengers movie and don't even bother watching Justice League or its prequel, Batman V Superman. This is why films like Black Panther and Wonder Woman have received praise in recent years since you could watch them without knowing too much, though Black Panther does rely on Captain America: Civil War a bit.

Anyway, you won't have to watch any DCEU movies to get into Shazam, at least according to director David F. Sandberg. The horror director told ComicBook.com that this film's job is to just introduce Billy Batson and his family to a new audience. Yeah, some references to Batman and Superman will be there, as seen in the trailer, but it won't be a huge deal if people are left in the dark.

"Well this movie's mostly just about introducing Billy Batson and Shazam and who he is, how he came to be. It takes place in this DC world where all these heroes exist, but in some ways it's both sort of self contained while also being a part of something bigger, but, yeah. That's a non-answer."

This is pretty good to hear since the cinema has been missing accessibility in recent years, aside from some original movies. Everything is getting either a reboot or some kind of sequel years after the first movie came out, *COUGH*Ghostbustesr 3*COUGH,* so knowing that Shazam will be more standalone is good news for everyone involved.

Shazam comes out on April 5, 21 days before Avengers: Endgame. Don't miss it!
