Disney was quick to announce the new Star Wars release dates not long after the first trailer of Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker. Many assumed that the films would be from Rian Johnson since his Star Wars trilogy was announced not long after The Last Jedi, which many see as the most controversial film in the series. Well, that isn't the case since Disney announced that this would be the trilogy from Game of Thrones showrunners David Benioff and D.B. Weiss.

According to Attractions Magazine, Bob Iger confirmed that Benioff and Weiss will be in charge of the next three movies. This would have been great news a few years ago but when you consider the critical reaction of the most recent Game of Thrones season. Then again, previous seasons were pretty great so fans might still flock over this.

With Disney alternating between Star Wars and Avatar films, Benioff and Weiss have a decent amount of time to work on these films. It also seems like it will take a very long time before we will see Rian Johnson's trilogy, assuming that these movies are still coming out of course. There are reports claiming that Johnson's Star Wars trilogy was canceled but nothing has been confirmed.

Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker will be coming out in December 2019. Benioff and Weiss' Star Wars movies will be coming out in 2022, 2024, and 2026.
