New Star Wars Rebels Season 2 Clips Show Jedi-Focused Finale & Darth Maul's Return

The much awaited Star Wars Rebels second season finale is looming near. New clips about the upcoming finale have surfaced placing fans more and more at the brink of anticipation insanity (or maybe it’s just me).

The first clip has been shared viathe weekly Rebels Recon aftershow on StarWars.com. It first goes inside The Mystery of Chopper Base and the young Rebel Alliance’s encounter with the giant spider-like creatures in Atollon.

There’s also several details revealed by showrunner Dave Filoni and Story Group's Pablo Hidalgo about the episode, which according to him is "all Jedi.” The episode also digs deeper into Ezra’s psyche and understanding of the Force. Since Ezra finds himself unable to communicate with the spiders, his ego is affected, which I think could present a dangerous opening for the Dark Side.

The other new Star Wars Rebels season 2 finale clip shows the clear return of Darth Maul. Although the pseudo-Sith appears to be weak and powerless in the clip, we may not have seen what he’s truly capable of yet.

Darth Maul’s appearance in the hour-long season finale has been mysterious at best. The new clip that debuted on Entertainment Weeklyfinally gives us a first look into the “Old Master” behind the cloak.

Everyone thought Obi-Wan Kenobi killed off Maul in The Phantom Menace, but a Dark Horse comic book and The Clone Wars animated series have shown him to have lived on, although not without wounds – physically and emotionally.

As the quick clip from Rebels show, Maul is obviously not finished wreaking menace on the galaxy. Although the video will make you feel almost sorry for the old guy as he shares to Ezra how the Sith has betrayed him.

Meanwhile, EW spoke to Filoni and voice actor Sam Witwer about the return of Maul. It looks like a previous theory of Ahsoka surviving a battle with Vader because of Maul’s appearance may not happen at all.

Filoni revealed:

I had pointed out several times in story meetings that we have an opportunity – if we wanted to – to actually have Darth Vader fight Darth Maul. That was something that [co-producer] Simon Kinberg and I were like, ‘Oooh…’ Then there was the opponent in the story meetings who would say, ‘Well, that’s fan service,’ and I’m like, ‘Yeah –exactly.’ [Laughs] I don’t see the problem with that, but you know we were very careful that we don’t just do things because they’re cool. We want to do things that are story driven.
The Vader/Maul thing is interesting at a fandom level; the more compelling personal story becomes about Ahsoka and Vader.

As for Ezra’s possible turning towards the Dark Side. Filoni said:

This whole season has been about getting Ezra to kind of explore the dark side of the Force and be aware of its existence on a powerful level that maybe he didn’t understand before.
It’s really kind of an Empire Strikes Back movement for the series, where we bring the dark side out more to our heroes and challenge them with it. It’s going to get pretty crazy before the end here.

It looks like the season finale will be throwing out more surprises than just Maul’s appearance and Ahsoka and Vader’s “long-awaited meeting.”

The two-part Star Wars Rebels: Twilight of the Apprentice finale will air on March 30 at 9pm on Disney XD.
