There's no doubt in everyone's minds that Spider-Man: No Way Home is already shaping up to be this year's most important comic book film and a lot of it has something to do with the rumored returns of both Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield. At this point, it's quite evident that Sony Pictures and Marvel Studios aren't in a hurry to advertise their monumental arrival to the Marvel Cinematic Universe despite all signs pointing to them appearing in the film.

Speaking of returns, Maguire and Garfield's respective love interests Kirsten Dunst and Emma Stone have also been rumored to return in No Way Home but according to a new scoop from tipster Daniel Richtman (via The Direct), that's no longer on the table.

The oftentimes credible insider reports that the Mary Jane Watson and Gwen Stacy actors were in fact considered to join the stellar cast of Spider-Man: No Way Home but the restrictions brought upon by the COVID-19 pandemic prevented them from reprising their roles.

Richtman does note that Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige is still interested in bringing both Dunst and Stone back for a future project which suggests that No Way Home won't be the end of Maguire and Garfield's Spidey saga.

I'm not gonna lie, it'll be quite a letdown if we don't see both Kirsten and Emma in Spider-Man: No Way Home but Richtman's update seems to offer a glimmer of hope that the film won't be a one-off for both Tobey and Andrew. Well, that's the beauty of the Marvel Multiverse and I'm glad the studios are capitalizing on the concept big time.

Spider-Man: No Way Home hits cinemas on December 17, 2021.
