As introduced in the The Lincoln Lawyer, portrayed by Manuel Garcia-Rulfo, Mickey Haller is a defense attorney who had to take a break after he had an accident while surfing. That led him to various medical operations and his use of pain-killers to which he became addicted to and had to undergo rehab.

After the death of one Jerry Vincent, Mickey Haller got summoned to the sala of Judge Mary Holder for being the successor of the late Jerry Vincent of his entire law practice. Days before his death, Vincent, as if, knew about his fate so he ensured that Haller would inherit his practice as well as all the cases he was handling, including the high-profile case of Trevor Elliot, a game developer.

Mickey Haller has two ex-wives: Maggie McPherson, the deputy District Attorney, whom he shares a child with, Hayley; and Lorna Taylor, his paralegal who is about to be married to his private investigator, Cisco. He is the son of a well-known defense attorney and it must be in their genes to be a good lawyer.

Taking the moniker in a literal way, Mickey Haller’s cars are all Lincoln cars, hence, The Lincoln Lawyer. But more than that, his style of arguments also mirror that of Abraham Lincoln’s way of writing: short, concise, and straight to the point. The brevity of Lincoln’s well-known speech, the Gettysburg Address, is perfectly executed with style even if it only has 272 words.

See, Lincoln’s way of writing is all about compression, only a few words but the point is direct. Same as the style of Haller when defending a case, he makes sure to convince people with his argument just by using a few words. He does not argue with a lengthy piece, but just enough to prove his point, and hopefully, win the case.
