Netflix’s Godzilla Anime Film Gets Title & Backstory

Godzilla will be stomping into Netflix as an anime come this fall. To get you hyped, Polygon Pictures (via CBR) has released the full synopsis of the anime film, as well as the full title of the film.

Dubbed Godzilla: Monster Planet (or Godzilla: Kaiju Wakusei), the story will put the characters in a situation where they protagonists are realizing that they are not the ones with the greatest power or control over Earth.

"The appearance of the giant living creatures ‘Kaijus' and the ultimate existence that destroys all monsters: Godzilla. Though the battle against kaiju's that lasted for half a century, human beings have experienced continuous defeat, and finally plan to escape from the Earth. And in 2048, only those who were selected by the A.I. managed under the central government boarded the inter-sidereal emigrant spaceship "Aratrum" to head for "Tau Cetus e," the planet beyond the distance of 11.9 light-years. However, the environmental condition differences between that of the Earth and Tau e, which they finally arrived after 20 years were far beyond the predicted numbers, and was not an environment considered to be habitable by human beings."

For the Godzilla anime film's story, we'll be following Haruo, who's now an orphan after Godzilla had killed his parents when he was still young. Since then, his main goal was to defeat the monster. He then becomes the leader of the Earth Returnists, seen in the image above. Sadly, when they arrive, what they're expecting may not be the same Earth, as it has become the unknown world and environment of Godzilla.

The idea of a hyperspace Godzilla and one that involves planets beyond Earth does put a more interesting spin to it.

Godzilla the anime film will have a great voice cast including Yuki Kaiji, Tomokazu Sugita, Takahiro Sakurai, Junichi Suwabe, Mamoru Miyano, and Kana Hanazawa. That's a lot of seiyuu biases for me than I could be ready for.

Thanks to Netflix, fans who are outside of Japan can still expect to watch Godzilla: Monster Planet as it will be streamed in over 190 countries.
