One of the massive hits for Netflix in 2020 is The Old Guard and it broke various records being one of the most popular original films on the streaming platform. The captivating story has taken fans and viewers to a story through time and there is no surprise that the film will be having a sequel to follow. It has been reported, though, that the movie proceeds with a new director to course and call the shots.

The sequel to The Old Guard has been in development for Netflix for quite a while and Netflix finally revealed and proudly announced that a new director will be taking over the project with Victoria Mahoney. The film will be based on the graphic novel of co-created by Leandro Fernandez with Greg Rucka who will also be penning the script.

Mahoney is known for various films under her belt such as Lovecraft Country, Queen Sugar, and You, and she even became the second unit director of Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker securing him the spot of being the first woman, and a Black one to be exact, to direct a Star Wars project.

Previously, it was Gina Prince-Bythewood who held The Old Guard before she steps down as the director of the sequel passing the baton to Mahoney. Still, she would not totally leave the project as she would be staying as an executive producer for the next film of Charlize Theron.

Gina Prince-Bythewood released a statement on Twitter about her sentiments on the project, "Genuinely blown backward by the level of collective talent, skill, and savvy that went into carving The Old Guard. I must've washed it over a hundred times, and as such, cannot communicate the true measure of my excitement -- being invited on The Old Guard journey, alongside ferocious badasses."

She added, "I love The Old Guard and the story and characters I was honored to put into the world. It was exciting to disrupt the genre. I have decided not to direct the sequel but will stay on as a producer. I leave our franchise in good hands as my girl Vic Mahoney takes on this next chapter of Nile and Joe and Nicky and Booker and Quynh and Andy, scripted by the beautiful mind of Greg Rucka."
